Review of Spiderman: The Movie by Boomerang Brother

Developer: Treyarch
Publisher: Activision

Genre: Action

Year released: 2002 (GCN, PS2, X-BOX, GBA)

Number of Players: 1

Based on the box office hit Spiderman, the game features levels based on scenes from the movie, as well as original levels that feature classic Spiderman villains such as the Scorpion and the Shocker.

Visuals: (74%)
I thought the graphics in Spiderman are a mixed bag. The backgrounds look nice and detailed, while the character models and textures were fairly ugly.

Controls: (73%)
The control scheme is decent, but pulling off combos is sometimes frustrating. In order to do a combination, you must press a sequence of buttons and/or buttons. Sometimes, you may end up pulling off the wrong move or just nothing happens at all.

Sounds: (74%)
The background music is awful; it’s very repetitive and annoying. Some of the voices from the movie voice their respective character in the game, which is really cool. Spiderman (Tobey McGuire) has some fairly cool (and some cheesy) dialogue, but Spidey will get repetitive and annoying as well.

Gameplay: (71%)
Most of the game revolves around getting from “Point A” to “Point B” while beating up baddies along the way. Some levels involve chasing and defeating a certain bad guy, protecting civilians, etc. There are also some stealth elements involved in the game, but it is not pulled off well. There would be several instances where I would hide in the shadows and an enemy would easily spot me. The camera suffers from a lot of problems as well.

Replayability: (45%)
I beat the game within a few days, on and off, and was not driven to play through the game again.

Personal Score: (65%)

Bottom Line:
I was deeply disappointed with SM: The Movie. It could have been so much better. The next Spidey game better improve.

Final Score: (67%) D+
