Review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles V: Tournament Fighters for SNES by BBro

Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami

Genre: Fighting

Year released: 1992

Number of Players: 1-2 simultaneously

The TMNT have been in several successful beat-‘em-ups, but now, they have entered the fighting arena. Very similar to Street Fighter II gameplay-wise, TMNT: TF features the TMNT and several villains, many of which are not easily recognizable. A tournament has been organized, and the winner will receive a ton of cash. All of the fighters have entered for their own reasons, but who will be the winner?

Visuals: (93%)
TMNT: TF for the SNES is by far the best looking 16-bit TMNT game. The sprites for the fighters are very detailed. The Ninja Turtles resemble their comic book forms rather than their goofy-looking cartoon selves.

Sounds: (93%)
Like TMNT IV before it, TMNT: TF features a great soundtrack. The voices and sound effects sound pretty good as well.

Gameplay (92%)
As mentioned before, the gameplay of TMNT: TF is very similar to that of Street Fighter II. All moves are done in similar fashions. One of the differences is that instead of using SF II’s 6-button control scheme, TF uses a 4-button control scheme, like that of game company SNK’s fighters. Another difference is that TF uses a Super Meter, in which, when filled, your character will unleash a hard-hitting Super Move. It is easily executed by simply pressing Fierce Punch and Fierce Kick at the same time. One of my main complaints is that the Computer AI can be totally cheap.

Replayability: (78%)
TMNT: TF has a lack of modes. The Tournament, Story, and Versus modes will probably be the most played modes, but they probably won’t keep you occupied for very long.

Personal Score: (92%)

Bottom Line:
A surprisingly good fighter. If you’re a TMNT and/or fighting game fan, check out TMNT: TF for the SNES. And for goodness sake, avoid the Genesis and NES versions. They are nothing like the SNES version.

Final Score: (90%) A-
