Mario Kart: Super Circuit Review

Genre: Racing

Year Released: 2001(Game Boy Advance)

Number of Players: 1 to 4 simultaneously

Mario and co. are back in the driver's seat for another round of kart racing fun! This time, you can take it on the road with you with Game Boy Advance!

Graphics: The game uses the same Mode 7 style as SMK, but the graphics are more like MK64, and look great. Animated elements have been added to the track backgrounds, like lightning and a Shyguy ship.

Play Control: The steering seems a little tight at first, but you get used to it. The buttons are mostly easy to reach. You usually won't use the harder ones to reach very often, like the horn, which is that teensy-weensy Select button. Using items is with L instead of A or Z.

Sound: The game has got excellent music and sound effects. The music is excellent and very catchy, and sound effects, like screeching tires and shells shooting, are great, as well. The characters also have horns, but they're a little hard to reach while racing, as mentioned above. One thing I wish is that Luigi's and Wario's voices should have been taken from MK64 instead of Mario Party. Luigi sounds like Mickey Mouse!

Challenge: 50cc is easy enough to get you eased into the game, but gets progressively harder through higher speed classes, as it should. One thing I don't like is that Red Shells never seem to miss-I had that thing down to an art in earlier Mario Kart games! Different track hazards, like crabs and Piranha Plants buried in the sand, are original and add to the challenge. A little complaint is that all the obstacles from the SNES version tracks you can unlock are gone. And don't forget multiplayer. I haven't played it yet, but if it's anything like previous versions' modes, it'll be one of the game's high points.

The Bottom Line: This is the best little racer for GBA I've played. If you're into Mario Kart or even just racing games, this'll be a treat.
