Pokémon Review

Genre: RPG

Year Released:1998 (Game Boy/Pocket).

Number of Players:1-2 (Vs. Battle, trading)

Mario Cameo Appearance: Go to the copycat girl's house and look at her TV. You will get this message: "A game with MARIO wearing a bucket on his head!" This is a reference to the Japan-only Super Famicom game, Mario & Wario.

151 different species of Pokémon are out there for you to capture, train, and battle others with. Pokémania is here!

Graphics: The Pokémon look quite good, though the actual gameplay graphics are pretty average. You and other characters can look quite small and simplistic. Battle animations aren't bad, though it would be nice if the Pokémon were animated (Pokémon Crystal has this feature). The only real difference in Pokémon Yellow is that you have a Pikachu that follows you around, as well as the color pallette being optimized for GBC (which means more colors)

Play Control: Incredibly simple. Since the battle system uses a menu (fight, run, item, etc.) it's extremely easy to battle other trainers and catch new Pokémon, so long as your own team is up to par...

Sound: Sound and music is not bad at all. Each area has its own musical track, though the music tends to loop a little too much and get annoying sometimes. Each Pokémon has its own sound, as well, which plays when it enters the battle. If you have Pokémon Yellow, you'll hear Pikachu say its name and such.

Challenge: Not terribly difficult, though you'll still be playing for a decent amount of time, especially if you're trying to get every single Pokémon the game has to offer. Try linking with a friend!

The Bottom Line: Despite how much you hear people saying how much they loathe Pokémon, the game isn't bad. You'll definitely want to try it at least quickly if you like RPGs. If you like these ones, be sure to try Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as well.
