The Adventures of Bayou Billy Review

Year Released: 1990 (NES)

Number of Players: 1

Bayou Billy must save his love and travel through three different types of gameplay.

Graphics: Other than the cool wavy effect at the intro screen, there's not much to boast about. Graphics don't make gameplay any harder, though.

Play Control: Control pad for walking (the area is isometric), A for punching, B for kicking, and both for jump kicking. At first, these controls are very hard, considering how much better the computer is at this than you. There are other modes where you drive and shoot, too. Shooting is easy, assuming you can hold your own in Duck Hunt. This requires an NES Zapper. Driving is a bit like that old F-1 game or Sonic Drift (without the drift). You get to shoot and grenade stuff from the car (forgot the buttons, but they're easy enough to figure out).

Sound: I like the music. I didn't even think the NES could use one of the instruments that this game uses. Even voice samples are in, however grainy.

Challenge: There's a certain way to beat things up. The real challenge is in keeping that up while watching everything else on the screen. It can get hard even in the first stage after you've got the controls down. Driving poses a challenge to keep yourself from crashing, and in shooting one has to shoot the others before they shoot you. Both of these are pretty easy.

Game Play: The driving and shooting are pulled off nicely (although a tad boring), but the fighting is boring! You strike your opponent every now and then--if you get too close for too long, you won't live. No running makes this boring. Not to mention the other hazards that are near impossible to keep up with. Meh.

The Bottom Line: Not the best game, but hey, it's Konami all the same.
