Chrono Trigger Review

Year Released: 1995 (Super Nintendo)

Number of Players: 1

Three friends from the kingdom of Truce stumble upon a time portal. From there, well, they'll never be the same.

Graphics: The walking/running sprites could have been better. Otherwise, the graphics are very good. From time warps to far-off mountains, this game delivers. Heroes and enemies alike look wonderful and vivid.

Play Control: Play control is more necessary here than in the average RPG. Rather than having random encounters like most games, this one has our heroes meet them upon seeing them. Think Super Mario RPG, if you can. Play control is solid to meet the game's needs.

Sound: Well... You'll want your TV sound on. Even OCR can't do full justice to these tracks--no offense to the folks at OCR. I noticed right away that the sound effects and musical instruments were another aspect similar to Super Mario RPG.

Challenge: If you want to beat this game, you must use your head in and outside of battle. It will take at least two tries to defeat a boss as things get heated up. You won't be dissappointed.

The Bottom Line: If you liked Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger expands on that game's mechanics (or, rather, Super Mario RPG simplifies Chrono Trigger). My thirty dollars were well spent, and I would have spent fifty. This game isn't the game to end all games, but it comes pretty darn close.
