Review of Donkey Kong 3 by Golem

Year released: ? (Arcade), 1985 (NES)

Number of Players: 1-2 (taking turns)

Stanley the Bugman has to get Donkey Kong out of the greenhouse before he lets so many bugs that the greenhouse is overrun.

Graphics: Same as the other two Donkey Kongs, basically. Stanley is more comparable to Donkey Kong Jr. than Mario in level of sprite detail.

Play control: Move right and left across the screen with right and left on the control pad, and jump up and down on the various levels of tables (three tables, three levels of height) with up and down on the control pad. The buttons make Stanley shoot his bug spray, which only shoots upward and has limited range.

Sound: Befitting. Different from the other Donkey Kongs in just the right bug spraying-way. There's still a lot of similarity to the other Donkey Kongs, though.

Challenge: Hit Donkey Kong with bug spray and protect the pots from being stolen at the same time. Donkey Kong is climing downward on vines from above, and in order to fully get him out, you'll need to climb atop the third table. Bugs will swoop down below you to the floor in order to steal the pots. You begin each stage with five pots, so you can still pass it after four pots have been stolen. You get points for having pots intact, though, so try to shoot the bugs before they steal the pots. Oh, yeah, if Stanley hits the bugs himself, he's a goner. Stanley's also a goner if Donkey Kong lowers himself too far on the vines! YEESH!

Gameplay: Stanley is faster than Mario and Donkey Kong, and quite appropriately--chasing those bugs is hard. It might seem hard at first, but if you just stand in one place and spray at Donkey Kong continuously, you should be fine. It takes about two cycles (three stages until the game loops, meaning three stages per cycle) for this simple answer to be done with (as the cycles progress, the game gets harder and harder). At this point, as you can guess, Stanley will really have to use his wits.
Oh, yeah! You can get a special bug spray can that will shoot what seems to be small golden torpedoes. These are super-powerful, but the can only last for as long as the special music holds out, much like the hammers in Donkey Kong.

Bottom line: Don't go in expecting platforming like Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. Donkey Kong 3 is definetely worth a go-around, but hang onto your receipt.
