Review of Duck Hunt by Golem

Year released: 1985 (NES)

Number of Players: 1

Shoot the ducks. But make sure you do it with that orange gun (or gray gun, depending on what color your NES Zapper is).

Graphics: Pretty good. You have your appropriately colored ducks, green grass, brown chuckling dog. Not much shading, but it's as realistic as the NES gets, from what I've seen.

Play control: It's hard to aim the gun at first (especially if the television you're using is small), but when you get the hang of it, shooting ducks is like, well, shooting fish in a barrel.

Sound: Quack, quack. Bam! Bam! Bam! Hehehehehe.
There's the sound for you. Actually, you probably won't be able to hear the "Bam!" part over the sound that the NES Zapper's trigger makes when you shoot.

Challenge: Once you get aiming down (took me about 45 minutes... really long and frustrating session), it's all a matter of moving your Zapper at a rate to catch up with the duck before it escapes. As you shoot more ducks, they get faster.

Gameplay: It's awesome!! You start out with a flamethrower, but as you advance in the game, you earn different weapons, like the rocket launcher and even ninja throwing stars! Once you beat level 20, you and the dog become best friends, and he counts as a duck whenever you shoot him. Oooh, and the weather patterns are cool, too! Oh! Oh! You should see the part where spaceships are flying by and a meteor is about to crash into the Earth. That's the part of the game in which you have to shoot ducks from outer space.
Now that I've entertained myself, I should tell you that none of what I just said (that is, under gameplay) is true. It's just same-old-same-old shooting at ducks. Boring after a while, unless you're in a competition or something.

Bottom line: Barely enough to pass an afternoon where other NES games of this age (Pinball, for one) would have no trouble entertaining you.
If you want to use the NES Zapper, check out Gumshoe--it's a game where you have to shoot the man who's walking through various stages to help him get by. That is, you shoot him to make him jump. You can also shoot any obstacles that get in his way.
