Review of Ghen War by Golem

Year released: 1995 (Saturn)

Number of Players: 1

The Ghen, outer space aliens, have gained the trust of Earth. Now they're trying to destroy the humans (just like that episode of Stargate: SG-1... the one where future Richard Dean Anderson has to go back in time). You're in a small resistance group making their way to Earth to stop these Ghen.

Graphics: Blocky and indistinct. Serves its purpose; not much else. I guess that's to be expected in 1995.

Play control: C button to fire, A button to jump, B to run, Z to fire whatever weapon you have selected, Y to select a weapon. Walking and aiming is pretty standard, but it's still worth mentioning that it's done well. Auto-aiming is done when enemies are within sight, and is very helpful. Judging the height of your jump will be the only problem you run into.

Sound: Great quality... but very bland. Both music and sound effects put me to sleep.

Challenge: You'll run into plenty of bad guys to shoot lasers at, and you have to cover your butt while you complete a given mission. Action-based. Ooh... here's the savage part: lose your three lives, and the game deletes your save file.

Gameplay: The map seems useless... you have to be able to tell what the directional numbers mean (270 means south). With such an impediment, completing missions can be a hassle. Also, openings in walls are hidden among tons of the same overpixelated pattern. Doubling back over your route will be done a lot... not fun... But at least you get lots of different stuff to blow up aliens with. :b

Bottom line: I like its simplistic action-based gameplay (rather than having to think, which has been my experience with FPSes [first person shooters]), but then I have to think just to figure out where I'm going. Nice to just sit back and shoot some stuff, but with my limited knowledge of the library of FPSes out, I'm guessing there's a better one than this to serve such a purpose.
By the way, I'm just about the only person in the universe to think Stargate: SG-1 stinks (based off of the network syndication episodes, which are two seasons old to you who watch it on Sci-fi). But, you know, at this point, just about all syndication stinks. Is it just me or is Andromeda starting to not stink as much as it did third season...?
