Review of M.C. Kids by Golem

Year released: 1991 (NES)

Number of Players: 1-2 taking turns

Mick and Mack have to stop the Hamburglar. Before he can build an army of cheeseburger-stealing beavers or something. Who knows?

Graphics: Animation is fluid, colors are perfect, nice black outline. Just like Super Mario Bros. 3.

Play control: Left on the control pad to move left, right on the control pad to move right, down to duck, A button to jump, ducking plus A to jump higher, B to pick up blocks, and ducking plus B to pick up blocks below you. Mick and Mack walk on an engine that increases their walking speed as they spend more time walking. Everything is great, couldn't ask for more.

Sound: From my review of Super Mario Bros. 3: "Not amazing, but there are some slightly catchy tunes. The NES' instruments are finally used to argue against those who say NES music is bland. Some sound effects seem new to me."

Challenge: Figure out how to manuever Mick and Mack and use certain blocks to collect cards (which you grab the same as grabbing a block), which you need to get to progress in the game (get so many cards in a level to move on to the next one). Thrown in are enemies, which you can take care of with blocks. Mick and Mack can take four hits, and every once in a while a heart to replenish their health will come from an enemy once the enemy is hit with a block. These challenges get harder and harder, as you might guess, but once you figure them out, passing it again is a cinch.

Gameplay: You can gather what it's like from the above. Basically, you need to use the environment to get to an unreachable place. Oh, yes, you'll need to know that there are certain spiky blocks that you can run over to switch gravity (that is, make it move up rather than down). Also, holding a block on large bouncy platforms will make Mick or Mack jump high.

Bottom line: Think Wario Land II.
