Review of Plok by Golem

Screenshots from VG Museum

Year released: 199? (Super Nintendo Entertainment System [SNES])

Number of Players: 1

Plok loves his flags, and everyone else loves hiding them to annoy the heck out of him.

Graphics: The graphics are cartoony and happy with a touch of weirdness. Everything is fairly large. Animation is good but not spectacular.

Play control: B to jump, A to spin jump, Y to throw a hand or a foot, depending on what you've already thrown. Plok throws these appendages to damage or destroy enemies. You can only throw four things at a time, since Plok only has two hands and two feet. Once both of his feet are gone, moving around is hard. When you throw something, though, it comes back to Plok in a few seconds. Plok's jumping ability isn't the best, which isn't unreasonable, it just makes for a challenge.

Sound: Pleasant and "funky" stuff. Always stays with cartoony instruments. Not exactly the most captivating music in the world, though.

Challenge: You'll encounter enemies and obstacles left and right. You'll need to make sure you don't throw away all your appendages at once (leaving you defenseless for a few short but crucial seconds) while maneuvering around stuff that can take a good bit out of Plok's health. This isn't your average platformer. It doesn't mess around for a while before giving you a decent challenge.

Gameplay: Nothing much to boast about. It's got a nice platforming engine, and gives a pretty straightforward means of attack. The nice thing about this game is its challenge. While there are little advancements (for example, in the second level, if Plok has a bee, you can press X to make it attack something), it has that challenge necessary to make a game last for a while before you beat it.

Bottom line: Suffers from no battery back-up option... You have to start from the beginning each time. Plok is a good platformer and something you can really get into despite being somewhat plain, due to its challenge. Plok is worth a buy even if you get it just to experience the off-the-wall stuff that happens. Guys popping out of the ground, gigantic circus members that look... creepy, yet hilarious, and lots of other weird stuff.
