Sonic X Season 1 Episode 1 Review

Episode Name: Debut

Year Released: 2003

Note: This review is of the American dubbed version. Sonic breaks into Eggman's base to stop his evil plot, but instead, Sonic gets blasted to Earth by a freak accident. Police chase hijinx ensue.

Animation: Your standard Sonic characters. They're drawn in the Sonic Adventure style that we've been seeing recently. Everything is smooth, except for running. Sonic's feet seem to be drawn less smooth than even the Genesis graphics. Oh, yeah, his head gets pulled back by speed or whatever, making him look aerodynamic. However, this achieves a Dave Manak impression (if you don't know, Dave Manak does the pencils for certain Archie brand Sonic comics, and is considered the least favorable of all pencils). Other than that and a few awkward moments of silly American-style animation, it's pretty much the same old anime style.

Plot: It's the basic set-up for the series, so not much plot development happens. This episode is nearly without evil, making Sonic's adventures seem pointless.

Voices: If you've ever watched a Saturday morning anime before, you know the voices. I've never heard Sonic's voice actor before, though, that was a nice surprise. Sonic, Tails, and Amy's voices are off--Sonic sounds too young, Tails too much like a girl (if I didn't know the Sonic continuum before the show, I might think Tails was a girl, whereas in the Sonic Adventures he actually has SOME masculinity), and Amy sounds too old.

Tone: Reminiscient of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, taking itself not too seriously and even, as I said before, pulling some American-ish animation tricks. This seems bad, considering all of the FMVs from the Sonic Adventure games were funny and serious. This show just tosses serious out the window.

The Bottom Line: Try watching SatAM Sonic cartoons instead. ^_^
