Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game Review

Year Released: 1990 (NES)

Number of Players: 1-2 Simultaneously

Shredder has kidnapped newswoman April O'neil, so the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles decide to go into action. Raised by a martial artist rat, these guys can kick shell. Haven't I heard this somewhere before?

Graphics: A big improvement over the first TMNT. Everyone is fleshed out and the three-quarter view is done well.

Play Control: The turtles are still slow. Not terribly slow, though. Everything is readily accessible, nothing bad to say.

Sound: The same theme from the show recycled over and over. It doesn't manage to get annoying, though. Hitting things isn't too sophisticated when it comes to sound.

Challenge: Great for a game like this. Not too easy, not too hard. It will take at least four or five afternoons to conquer it.

Game Play: Not so varied as the first TMNT. Every turtle has a different weapon, but it makes no difference in damage, range, or anything. There is, however, a special attack the turtles do on jump + attack that does double damage. You can do other things, but let's just say that the environment comes into play a lot and that everything is easy to perform, fun, and challenging. Not to mention that they are in a three-quarter view environment, unlike the first TMNT, which allows for walking up and down. You can just imagine the gameplay this brings.

The Bottom Line: A good game bound to last you a while. The two-player mode makes the game even funner.
