Yoshi Lore Review

Re-evaluated on April 6, 2004. Scroll down to the bottom to see how the site has grown since the original review.

Original review:
Founded: September 18, 2002

URL: http://www.yoshilore.com/

Layout and Look: You have a gray background with "Yoshi Lore" written on it, then there's a table on top of it with all of the stuff you want to see. The table has a calm blue background with black, red, and green text, all in Comic Sans. Everything fits in, except for the page's gray background--the "Yoshi Lore" text is written in deep and vibrant colors, kind of clashing with the gray and just uglying up the page. No real problem if you're running your monitor resolution on 800 by 600 pixels, as most of the background will be cut out (as a result of the main table taking up space). Also, the links change to weird colors when you put your cursor over them. The site, in my opinion, should have kept up the comely look and left the links alone.

Getting Around: The classic table layout--navigation on the left, main reading material to the right of the navigation in a bigger column. Yoshi Lore puts all of the advertising (affiliates, topsites, etc.) on the right.

Loading Time: Mmm, I counted about three seconds for the average Yoshi Lore page to load on my 45,333 phone line internet service. Not bad, but it could've been better.

Variety: There's a lot of information and news, nothing new to those who hang around The Mushroom Kingdom. Some editorials are on the site, too. However, what you'll want to look at on this site is its newsletters, polls, contests, and other stuff--things where you're only going to appreciate the site if you participate. The Club just completes the motif. Definetely something I haven't seen before, or at least much of. Yoshi Lore doesn't exactly have loads and loads of interactivity, but there's still a good amount there.

Usefulness: It's a lot easier to get Yoshi information from a site purely about Yoshis as opposed to The Mushroom Kindgom. Here it is.

Anything Else?: The site has a lot to tell you about itself. There's some other stuff that I didn't mention, but it's not really worth mentioning--at least, at the time of review.

The Bottom Line: Looks like a great site to ease someone into the internet. In addition, if you're looking for a community to join, try this place out.

Yoshi Lore Button

As of April 6, 2004:
The ugly background is no more, left with a quaint gray. The main table which holds all the information now has one column of dark green, one column of dark red, and a final column of dark blue, all working together wonderfully. However, the text on the dark blue background all too often red or dark green, making it hard to see. I found myself using Ctrl+A (select all) a lot.
Links are kinda creepy. Yoshi Lore uses the JavaScript that lets the webmaster not allow the URL of a link to appear in the bottom left of Internet Explorer as the cursor is placed over the URL. To your average Joe, I suppose this is no problem, but it hindered my memorization of certain URLs to make navigation easier.
As for material, I have been noticing a big increase in the downloads section. A walkthroughs section puzzles me, considering the only game warranting a walkthrough (in my opinion) would be SMW 2: Yoshi's Island (yeah, so sue me if there's a Paper Mario walkthrough on Yoshilore and I have one up on Nintendo Fans... :b... it won't happen again). Every other downloads section, including sounds, wallpapers, cursors, and more, wouldn't be described as beefy or chock full, but there is a good amount there. The prescense of Sonic and Star Fox wallpapers puzzles me, but it's cool, all the same.
The Super Mario Bros. cartoon section rivals the SMB Info Station's (if you don't know what the SMB Info Station is, don't bother asking... this is a Yoshi Lore review, after all :b) attempt at a show guide with a lot of the episodes being downloadable. Quite awesome, quite awesome. Summaries are available as well.
Yoshi Lore never was much for fan stuff, but there is some growth. I'd compare it to a certain Info Station if it weren't particularly evil to do so. :b
The Yoshi information is all there, still at the fingertips of anyone who visits Yoshi Lore.
It seems this site has shrugged off its interactivity, save for showing off reviews that have been put on the forums (this reviewing system has met relative success, obviously to the site's advantage). However, it's all there, just buried under a bunch of other updates that I've seen elsewhere.
All in all, Yoshi Lore has grown somewhat similarly to Purple Yoshi's Page (ugh, I keep sticking other sites in this review :b, go look up Purple Yoshi's Page on your own if you don't know what it is) that doesn't run out of bandwidth every two seconds. Cartoon guides and interactivity would be my biggest attraction to Yoshi Lore.
