Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer Review

Year Released: 2002 (Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, Gameboy Advance)

Number of Players: 2 (consoles), 1 (Gameboy Advance)

One of a few attempts at a surfing geme in a while by Activision 02 and Treyarch.

Graphics: The overall graphics look great. They had to put a lot of detail into the water, seeing as it's a big part of the game. The 3D character figures look good, too. It's up to the standards of today's console games.

Sound: It sounds just like the ocean, you can hear the sounds of the water crashing around you while surfing the barrels, and the soundtrack fits right into the mood of the game. Like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, you can turn songs on and off to make a playlist that you like, and you can listen to the songs as you like.

Control: If you've played nearly any extreme sports game that's out at this time, you shouldn't have a hard time getting used to the controls. There are different sets of moves and tricks: arials, face, barrel, and exit. The button controls for the tricks just changes depending on what part of the wave you are surfing.

Challenge: The main challenge of the game would be in the tougher carreer mode goals. Some of the competitions are hard too. It's not too hard to string combos together, all you have to do is get the special meter maxed out, and do a bunch of tricks to keep it from going back to green from yellow.

Gameplay: Similar to the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. You have different sets of tricks to do, and you unlock more special tricks as you complete certain goals. In carreer mode, some levels will have different score challenges as well as level-oriented goals. Some levels will have competitions you have to beat.

Bottom line: This is definitely a great game. Anyone who's played nearly any other extreme sports game will like this. I won't say that it moves over the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, but it's definitely pretty good.
