Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron Review

Year released: 1993 (Genesis)

Number of Players: 2

Eathlings have invaded the planet of Funkotron! They are scaring the local Funcotronians, and now it's up to Toejam and Earl to capture the earthlings in jars and ship them back to earth.

Graphics: It looks like, well, a classic Genesis game. The graphics aren't spectacular, though it's not hard to look at. I like the pink fungus, though.

Control: It may be a little complicated at first, but you'll get used to it after playing a while. The good thing is, you can change the button control, if you like the jump button to be in a different place. It's easier to play this if you have a six button controller. X, Y, and Z will act as shortcuts to the sub controls (funk scan, Panic, and the jar machine).

Sound: This game has some great beats and tunes. I admit, even for a Genesis, the sound compares to games with soundtrack like Rayman 2. The sound effects are good too, but they don't happen as often.

Gameplay: This is classic. It has the feeling of classic platform games, with the addition of riding bubbles, bouncing on pink fungus, and capturing people in jars. Getting presents is an important part of this game. There are also sub-levels where you can get a bunch of items.

Challenge: I never actually beat this game. It looks easy during the beginning, because it is. Wait until you have to capture rabid dogs and boogie men. It's not exactly necesarry to get every single thing in this game, but you'll have to capture every human in every level. Collecting the codes at the end of levels helps too.

Bottom Line: It's a great game. I have a lot of Genesis games, and this is my favorite, even over all the Sonic games. Not everyone will like it, but pick it up if you can find it, if you need a new platformer, or you just want a new game.
