Review of Super Bomberman 2 by Golem

Year released: ? (Super Nintendo)

Number of Players: 1-4 (multitap required)

Bomberman, there are some bad guys begging for you to blow them up.

Graphics: Fitting colors. Everything is simplistic (except for the big bosses), nothing stunning.

Play control: Great, which is crucial for such a game. Bomberman can move in four directions, restricted to move to certain places by hard blocks (read more about that in the Saturn Bomberman review under play control and gameplay). Lay a bomb with A, pick it up with A (if you have the right powerup), kick it by walking away then towards it (if you have the right powerup). Nothing special, all I can say is that everything works.

Sound: Playful tracks that don't really show off the Super Nintendo's capabilities. Still, it's enjoyable stuff. Sound effects are there, but nothing to brag about.

Challenge: Meh. After experiencing Saturn Bomberman, these bosses were pretty weak. Still, you will have to think about enemies and keep track of your own bombs to win the day. The Bomberman formula, no matter how diluted, cannot truly fail in this area.

Gameplay: Just like Saturn Bomberman, except there are no dinosaurs nor a Master Mode. After having played through two Bomberman games, I can say that the Bomberman formula has definetely grown on me. Everyone knows that the multiplayer mode is great, but the single player mode in these older games is great, too. Bomberman must avoid enemies while setting off switches. He can attack enemies with bombs, but meanwhile must take care that he doesn't get blown up by the bomb. Also, he has to avoid enemies that he cannot blow up--Bomberman starts out with the ability to lay but one bomb at a time. This kind of intense gameplay keeps me wanting more. Unfortunately, Super Bomberman 2 ends just as the action moves into its prime. Still, much harder, and the player would be ripping their hair out.

Bottom line: This is definetely a rainy day game. It starts out boring you, and then creeps up on you with its good gameplay, like a TV show that gets better as the season (or series for you Brits) goes on.
