-A BIOGRAPHY-

Prologue

On the crest of a large, round hill, a lone man looks expectantly upwards into the black, starry sky. He sits in silence, his neck craned upward, his large blue eyes searching expectantly for some glimpse, some reassuring sign. It is cold, and he wipes his large, bulbous nose with a handkerchief, which he then puts into the pocket of his old, brown overalls. He reaches up with one long, burly arm, doffs his plaid cap, and runs his large, rough, gentle hand through his tousled black hair as he maintains his vigil.

Behind him, a beautiful young woman, with large green eyes and wiry brown hair, looks out at her husband with concern. She watches him from a window in the side of what appears to be a large mushroom. It is, in fact, a small cottage, in a village full of similar mushroom-like houses, which rests in a valley at the center of a ring of green hills.

Indeed, in this land, many things are not what they at first appear.

The young couple are not natives to this land. Their home, now distant, was the fresh, green countryside and old-world villages of Italy. How distant now does that peaceful life seem, in this strange yet beautiful place.

Since arriving here, they had seen many wondrous things, and bravely faced countless dangers. Nothing, however, could prepare them for the fear and uncertainty that plague them this chilling, still night.

For tonight, they feared for their newborn children.

CHAPTER 1: Mr. and Mrs. Mario

The story of the Mario Bros. begins many years ago, in the beautiful country of Italy. It was there, about forty-five years ago, that a man named Genarro Mario met and fell in love with a lovely young woman named Petunia. They had met when Genarro, who spent his days lazily rolling across the land in his humble caravan, happened to stop near a farm. Genarro was a plumber by trade, and was hired to fix a water pump for the farmer in exchange for dinner. Genarro, a kind, gentle man who always loved good food and company to money, accepted. As he worked, the story goes, he sang a beautiful song, which reached the window above, of the farmer’s young daughter, who heard it, and was entranced by it’s beauty. That evening, she saw for the first time the traveler, and fell in love with the young man. He was short, slightly pudgy, in humble brown overalls, but he turned out to be a wonderful person. He entertained his hosts with tales of his travels, and his kind, gentle, humble manner stole the young Petunia’s heart. They were married soon after, and together, the prosaic young couple planned to spend their days happily rolling across the land, passing through villages and seeing great things, singing as they rumbled lazily over worn paths and over the cobblestone streets of lovely villages.

Little did they suspect the turn their lives would take.

One day, as they ambled along the beautiful blue Mediterranean, far from any town or village, they came across what appeared to be a circus. They entered, and were amazed to discover themselves the sole audience of a truly wonderful spectacle. They witness amazing creatures and wonders, as well as the mysterious ring master, a lean man, in a purple vest, black cape, and top hat. Later, they asked him where he obtained his wonders. Leading them to a sewer drain which took them to a small underground grotto, the magician showed them his wonderful collection, and a giant sewer pipe which protruded from the ground. Standing on a grating elevator, they descended down, and he showed Mr. and Mrs. Mario a place unlike any they had ever seen.
