Small Theories
These are random thoughts that don't warrant a report.

When Yoshi gave the brothers a cape in Super Mario World, he said that it had magical powers, and that it might help on their quest. Why don't we see that cape at all the first level, and even after that, they just get another cape when they grab a Cape Feather? My guess is that the cape's power is linked to the Cape Feather's. When our bros. go tag team, that means one can carry the cape while the other rests.

Why are Mario and Luigi normally the size of a goomba? Why does nearly every game call them "Super Mario Bros." or "Super Mario"? Well, I say that the one-block-tall Mario and Luigi aren't at their normal height. Perhaps Magic/Super/plain Mushrooms just remedy their shortness. Now Bowser and his turtle clan know black magic; they could use it on the brothers. One hit makes them small, another and they die.

What happens when Mario and Luigi die? Do they really die? In Super Mario World, we even see a halo above our heroes when it's "Game Over". Are there extra Marios and Luigis as the first four games suggest? I say no. Bowser's selected minion of the area probably throws them back to the beginning of the stage, losing whatever power they had and the ground they gained. But, were I right, wouldn't Mario and Luigi be melted by now? I'm willing to bet Bowser's lava isn't hot enough to do the job. Is he that dumb to leave an ax AND have extremely hot lava?

Why is Toad Town called Toad Town in Paper Mario? Well, I think that all mushroomians are still just mushroomians, and aren't considered Toads now as some think. I think that Toad is honored for his work by naming Mushroom Kingdom after him. And also, after Toad's hospitality, every healing stop with a mushroom retainer has adopted Toad as their hotel chain name.

An interesting theory I pick at sometimes is Peach being married to Mario. I ask myself, "Why else is Peach now referred to by her first name?" Well, there are some who take things strictly for what you see is what you get. For them, it would make sense. Plus Peach's cake could just be a wedding cake. Against that whole wedding theory is this: I don't care how little power N64 had, they could have added lots of mushroomians and some friends had it been a wedding. No Luigi? Nor Yoshi? That's either extremely cold, or they had to elope. But, there are some who take everything into account--especially that which Japan had. For one, Peach was always Peach, not Toadstool, so that nulls the common name theory. That, added with the theories above, tell you that Peach could not be considered married to Mario by that type. So, majority votes goes to Mario and Peach being single.

Pipes, pipes, and more pipes. That's what you see all across the Mushroom Land in the Super Mario games. how did they get there? And furthermore, why? Well, Bowser could have thought that pipes he could use to disguise as transportation for his army. They provide warps, plus no one would think to go inside large protruding pipes! And ever since, they've been littered about the land. Bowser didn't get the idea after Super Mario Bros., though, as he continued to use them. As you can see in Super Mario RPG they are still there. But how did new pipes in areas Bowser never reached pop up in there? Perhaps Smithy took a page from Bowser's book. It could be a trap. When he saw the use of the warp pipes, perhaps he could lure unsuspecting people into his trap. In Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, you can see Tatanga and Wario also "borrow" the idea.

Why is there a time limit on stages, even in pipe zones in Super Mario Bros. 3? Well, it's a good guess that Bowser's army picks up on Mario and/or Luigi's location, and high-tails it there. Mario and/or Luigi is forced to retreat, him/them doing his/their dying pose and restarting the stage.

Super Mario Bros. 3, scene 1-2. The first pipe you come across spits out goombas, which are smart(or perhaps dumb) enough only to emerge after the others have been stomped. And, looking closely, you see sky under the pipe--no connection to the ground except on the bulging edges. Well, one valid reason is that a Magikoopa is inside; but, then again, where will it get the spinning blocks? Maybe a better explanation is that only enough goombas are there to hold off the bros. until Bowser's army catches on. Still not very good. I'm puzzzled on this one...

Wario and Waluigi! Where did these two come from? In issue 150 of Nintendo Power(November 2001), they reveal the secret that has puzzled the Marioverse. Wario is Mario's brother! "Racing off in his souped-up, purple Wariomobile, Mario's evil twin sets out on a vast new adventure." says Nintendo Power in the mentioned issue.

SPOILER! If you haven't beaten Wario Land II and haven't beaten the entire game, you might not want to read on.
Wario Land II has six endings. The first five conflict each other, saying Wario gets his money back several times. Well, I think it must happen like this: Wario sleeps through the Black Sugar Gang's siege, and they toss him out. He gets his castle back and calls it a night. The next day he sets out to get his treasure back in the longest way to the end. When he defeats Syrup, he notices that all his treasure isn't there. Syrup and her gang hide in three other places, and Wario busts them up again in the factory. Trying to get the treasure, he ends up saving them in the haunted mansion and the lost underwater city. Finally, in the sixth ending, after getting all his treasure back, he decides to go on Syrup's turf and get her back for all she did, and takes a huge bag of treasure from her secret stash.

SPOILER! If you haven't beaten Wario Land II through-and-through haven't seen all the Wario Land 3 levesls, you might not want to read this small theory.
The last Wario Land II level has Wario in Captain Syrup's castle. I was amazed when I saw a similar level in Wario Land 3--the last stage before going back to the first map. They are both built by shiny black spheres, some of which break under Wario's attacks. What happened here?! There is no relation to Syrup and the Clown! I have no idea what happened here, but I have a feeling there may be connections--he stole her riches thrice, never getting it back by losing it to Wario two times.

Why are there differences in remakes of the same game? Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Advance for example. Healing yourself was a lot easier, and you got lives by points and not just mushrooms. Then there were three instead of two mushrooms in each level to heighten your heart meter, and Yoshi eggs were strewn about the level. And finally, you can't forget that some enemies were giant and Robirdo stormed in. Super Mario Advance changed Super Mario Bros. 2 quite a bit. So how can I explain the alteriations? My opinion is that this is one of those theories that have no answer; at least as of yet to me. If you come up with anything, please e-mail me! (click here to see my e-mail)

Another thing to think about is that in the set of cartoons Bowser seems to be a master of mechanics, not to mention he looks more based off of old NES graphics than hand art. Bowser from the shows could very well be another Koopa using Ludwig's inventions under Bowser's supervision, for Mario Bros. and company never refer to Koopa as Bowser.

A yoshi... What is it? (I have no idea why this question is asked of yoshis often, but not of koopas or Tatanga, to name a few.) It has dinosaur (supposedly), turtle, and frog traits. Koopas stand upright and have shells and shoes, and as stated from Super Mario Bros.' (the movie) edition of yoshis, scales. Yet Yoshis have strong legs, short arms, and a long tongue like bopping toadies(SML2:6GC). We might assume that both have a docile temperament (bopping toadies more than koopas, since the bopping toadies were under Wario's control), and we know that both have eyes jutting out from the top of their head. It sounds as if somewhere along the evolutionary line an amphibian crossed with a reptile. Who knows where the tail came from; perhaps Koopas had longer tails way back. I think that yoshis have nothing to do with dinosaurs in the same sense that piranha plants have nothing to do with piranhas.

Mario and Luigi, in Super Mario Bros. 3, don't drop down to small Mario when wearing a suit (I.E. fire, tanooki, frog) like in other games. I think this is true because Bowser's minions did not have the black magic to put the hurt on the brothers. Bowser took over seven kingdoms, for goodness' sake, there has to be some sort of lag.
