![]() ![]() Hello, I'm Greg who'll be covering this report mostly. My fellow
workers through all this will be...
~crickets chirp~
So let's get started! First we--errr, I'll explain the general background,
then get into heavier stuff. When Mario first came over to America, he was still known as Jumpman. But one
day, while the head of Nintendo (here's the part I'm unsure about) was thinking
of a name for Jumpman, his landlord, who looked just like Jumpman, came in. His
name was Mario. Thus, our hero was named Mario. I'm not %100 percent sure if
that story is true, but I'm pretty sure Mario was named after NOA H's landlord.
Bear with me here, I'm doing my best.
A while after that, in 1986 to be precise, Super Mario Bros. 2
was born. It was just like the first one, 'cept Mario stopped more easily and
Luigi jumped higher and ran faster. This was not a 2-player game, had way
tougher stages, and 9 levels. This beauty wouldn't be released in America,
though. NOA thought it would be too hard for American audiences(remember, you
couldn't save Mario games back then). So NOA translated a game called Dokki
Dokki Panic to the Marioverse instead, and was finished in 1988. It is now
considered many a player's fav Mario game, 'cuz it was so different from all the
others. I don't know when, but some time after that and before Super Mario
All-Stars, NOJ found out, and included bad guys from that game in future games.
Also, their version o' SMA-S was exactly the same, 'cept the language.
Do ya think I'm doin' good? Huh? Huhuhuhuhuhuh? Now fast
foward to the year 1988 (I suppose; once again I'm not sure)
Nintendo needed a game to show off the Game Boy! QUICK! They whipped up Super
Mario Land with the interesting (Superball) Flower item, and finished it without
Myamato's usual part in the Mario game. QUICK, QUICK! They shipped it over to
America just in time for the big showoff in 1989. They made a few
translations(items and people), and put together a manual. The enemy names were
very interesting--Chibibos being the Goombas, Giras being the Bullet Bills, and
after that every enemy was new but didn't have an American name either. Now let's go to the beginning o' 1991, when Super Mario World has just come
out. Many discover the hidden Yellow Switch Palace atop Kappa Mountain the first
day they play the game. Kappa Mountain... sounds sorta familiar, like Koopa!
Because that's where Koopa came from. A Kappa was an evil turtle in Japanese
legend, and for the Mario games they changed it to Koopa.
Zip foward to September 24th, 2000. Nintendo has made it's third name change
for Super Mario RPG 2. Game Cube had an amazing showoff a few weeks ago. And
I've finished this report.~~~ Note: After researching this once more, I found out that Japan had SMB USA
for the Famicom(their NES) which was our SMB2 after we got it. SMB2(Western) also appeared in the Japanese Super Mario Bros.
All-Stars.
