![]() ![]() Imagine the colorful landscape of NEC's Fantasy Zone series, add Opa-Opa (as usual), but then jerk the camera around to give a railed shooter Space Harrier-type perspective. What you have now is called Space Fantasy Zone. The scaling and colors are better than Master System graphics. However, collision detection seems to be off. Monsters are unoriginal and many seem to come straight from Space Harrier, which some suggest might have been part of what sparked a legal dispute over the game with SEGA. Music relies heavily on the Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone games. One original thing is the store, where one can buy powerups between stages.
For a long time, this game was delayed. I'm not aware of any dates other than the copyright from the title screen, 1991. The game itself can be found on the internet in its complete form, or at least a very close likeness to what its complete form would be. However, NEC ran into legal trouble, supposedly from SEGA. The game was planned to be released on the Turbo Duo (PC-Engine CD), but never was, at least officially. Supposedly, there are promotional versions out there. There were even printed ads for the game in Japan.
